Coils and Couture

Author: Ashley E.

When you combine an afternoon of natural hair and fashion, you get an amazingly well put together event called Coils and Couture. My sister and I had the pleasure of attending the event last weekend which was held at Unwine Paint and Sip Art Studio in Columbia, SC. The walls in the venue were adorned with colorful and vibrant artwork making it the perfect setting to host such a fab event. Guests were treated to a wine and dessert bar and given the opportunity to mingle and shop at various vendors in attendance. Some special guests even received a “swag bag” filled with goodies from the hosts. The afternoon was filled with giveaways, shopping, food, hair styling demos, a mini fashion show and a dj in the mix. The atmosphere created a nice vibe.

The creative minds behind the event were Alisha Morgan, the founder of Natural Women United; Nicole Jennings, founder of Purgasm Shop, and Adai Quaye owner of Avah’s Closet. Their goal was to reach out to fashionistas and naturalistas in the local area and to utilize each other’s following/clientele.

Alisha is known as the “natural socialite” by many close to her. She has traveled to many natural hair events in different states and has hosted many natural hair meetups on her own. When she started her organization back in 2011 natural hair products weren’t as accessible as they are now. Her meetups gave women the opportunity to get more information about products and how to manage and style their hair. Her goal is to showcase small businesses and introduce them to their target clientele.

Nicole’s business (Purgasm Shop) is unique in that she creates skin and hair products by using organic food ingredients. Her products have been featured on

Adai’s (Avah’s Closet) business is aimed at getting individuals to embrace their culture by incorporating African fashion and traditions into their daily practices. The models in the fashion show wore pieces from Adai’s line. Her work has been featured on
