MS Left Me Out Premiere

Last month I had the opportunity to attend the premiere of the documentary film short MS Left Me Out. The documentary shows how strongly policy affects the lives of people, and it also gives viewers an inside look into the lives of people who were directly affected by the decision of legislators not to expand Medicaid in Mississippi.

MS Left Me Out actually started off as the name of a campaign that brought awareness to the healthcare system in the state.  I wanted to get more information about the making of the film so I reached out to one of the producers, Kristian Weatherspoon and the director Roderick Red for a short interview.

Kristian was the leading force behind the film. Having previously worked for the Mississippi Health Advocacy Program, she assisted individuals with healthcare enrollment after the Affordable Care Act law was passed.  It was during her experience with helping people with enrollment that she realized how detrimental not expanding Medicaid was to the state of Mississippi.

“Many of the individuals that were trying to get enrolled had to be turned away because they fell into coverage gaps. People that fell into coverage gaps made too much money to qualify for traditional Medicaid but were not making enough to qualify for tax credits that would assist them in paying for market place/ACA insurance. Without those tax credits the insurance offered was too expensive and it left many individuals in an unfortunate dilemma of not being insured.” ~KW

For those that are unaware, in 2008 The Affordable Care Act also known as Obamacare was passed. Under this law every state had to expand their Medicaid programs so that low income people could get Medicaid. A Supreme Court decision gave states the option of not expanding and Mississippi was one of the states that decided not to expand. Some state legislators felt that it was unconstitutional to force Medicaid expansion even though the federal government was willing to pay for expansion.

“People have this misconception that many individuals needing coverage are lazy but these are some of the most hardworking people. They are the service workers, fast food workers, construction workers, barbers and hair stylists. Some of them are working two or three jobs just to maintain. I was touched the most when I met a lady that had a lump in her breast but she postponed seeing a specialist because she couldn’t afford it. Her mom had died from breast cancer. This woman worked every single day but when it came down to buying food and providing for her family she had to put her health to the side. I broke down in tears after hearing this lady’s story.” ~KW

Director Roderick Red of Red Squared Productions got on board when Kristian reached out to him after seeing some of his previous production work.

“Filming took about a year and during that time I learned more about the healthcare process, coverage gaps and I gained a better understanding of the Affordable Care Act. I’m very optimistic that the documentary will bring about change or at the least provoke conversation.” ~RR

The premiere took place at the Jackson Convention Complex in Jackson, Mississippi. There was a nice turnout and attendees were treated to hors d’oeuvres before the screening. The event concluded with a brief Q&A panel discussion that consisted of policy professionals, legislators and healthcare officials in the state.  On a personal note I found the documentary to be very enlightening. Even with my education background in public health and working in the health field I was still very unaware of a lot of things regarding healthcare.  I asked Kristian what were her hopes for the documentary and she had the following to say:

“I really wanted to put a face on the issue. I want this documentary to serve as an educational tool for constituents and individuals not educated on policy. I want them to know the decisions their legislators are making on their behalf. Healthcare shouldn’t be politicized; it means life or death for many people living with chronic illnesses. The process of making the documentary was exciting as well as eye opening and it gave me a new appreciation for the things I take for granted.”

Nina Simone Movie Trailer Sparks Outrage

The first trailer for the Nina Simone movie that premiered last week has the internet going crazy but not in a good way.  The movie titled “Nina” stars actress Zoe Saldana as Nina Simone.  The film will cover the life of the singer and civil rights activist and it will chronicle her career demise and return to music.

When it was first announced that Saldana would be portraying Nina Simone, producers were met with a lot of criticism particularly from black viewers who believed that an actress who better resembled Simone should have been cast for the role.  Nina Simone had a very dark complexion and she was known for her strong ethnic features.  I think the biggest issue with Saldana being cast for the role is that she does not identify as African American but as a Black Latino.

Watching the trailer you can visibly see Saldana’s heavy dark make-up and prosthetic nose.  Many have compared Saldana’s appearance in the movie to a caricature. Singer India Arie is one of the many people who have spoken out against the film. She had the following to say about the casting choice:

“I think the best way to say it is that they casted her against type and went too far to make her fit,” she explained. “It’s not my place to say how Zoe Saldana perceives herself, and I can’t say how anybody else perceives her either.”

Nina Simone’s daughter, Simone Kelly says that she isn’t upset with Zoe Saldana but is upset with the director Cynthia Mort for telling an inaccurate story of her mother. Kelly stated that the family wasn’t consulted for the film.

Honestly because of my age I wasn’t too familiar with the life of Nina Simone.  I knew she was a singer but I didn’t realize how significant her legacy was until I recently watched the documentary “What Happened Miss Simone” .  I’m interested in watching the movie and I’m also a fan of Zoe Saldana so I will definitely be checking the film out.

“Nina” is scheduled to be released on April 22, 2016.

Author: Amy Nicole

I’ve been a fan of Issa Rae since I watched her web series Awkward Black Girl a few years back and it’s amazing to see how much her career has grown in such a short period of time. Since the success of Awkward Black Girl she has gone on to produce and write several more web series’, has written a book, and has recently partnered with HBO to produce a comedy series.

Issa’s newest project is a narrative podcast called “Fruit”.  The audio drama focuses on the life of a gay NFL player who tries to keep his sexual orientation private.  During the podcast listeners will hear the story of a football player who is only indentified as X. Throughout each episode X will discuss his journey of self-discovery and sexual exploration.  The show will also follow the relationships that X has with his family, friends, and teammates and will reveal how those relationships affect his self-identity.

I’ve recently started listening to the podcast and it is definitely an interesting show!  Issa Rae’s approach to telling a story in the form of a podcast is very unique and creative!  Fruit is available exclusively on the Howl premium service, available through a mobile app for iOS and Android and online at howl.fm.  You can also listen to the show on Issa Rae’s YouTube Channel.

ROOTS GETS A REMAKE

ROOTS

Author: Amy Nicole

The 1977 miniseries Roots will be reintroduced to viewers on Memorial Day 2016. Roots was released years before I was born but I watched re-runs of the series as a kid and I remember how much of an impression the story and characters left on me, and how it shaped my views on American history.

If you’re not familiar with the storyline of Roots, the film is based on a novel by author Alex Haley. The series focuses on the struggles of an African American family over several generations which spans from slavery to the Civil War era. Roots is being directed by Allen Hughes and was written by Mark Rosenthal and Larry Konner. The film will feature an all star cast including Forest Whitaker, Anika Noni Rose, Anna Paquin, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and T.I.(Clifford Joseph) Harris.

Some may question whether a remake of the film is necessary but I think it is essential to help educate the younger generation about African history and the struggles that our ancestors endured.

JOSEPH FIENNES TO PLAY MICHAEL JACKSON IN TV COMEDY

mike and joe 3

Initially when I read that actor Joseph Fiennes would be portraying Michael Jackson in a TV show I thought it was a joke! Unfortunately yesterday I discovered that the rumors were in fact true. As a Michael Jackson fan it bothered me that a white man was cast to portray an iconic African American music star.

Many people on social media (specifically African Americans) were outraged about the news of the casting and blamed Hollywood executives for who they believed were once again trying to erase black culture. Some people actually agreed with the decision and responded with comments like, “Michael Jackson wanted to be white anyway”. Even Joseph Fiennes made a statement saying that he was actually closer to Michael Jackson’s skin complexion.

If you are a true fan of Michael Jackson you would know that he suffered from a skin condition called vitiligo which causes your skin to lose pigmentation. Michael admitted in the past that he did use cream to help even out his skin tone.

In a 1993 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Michael was asked about claims that he wanted a white child to play him in a Pepsi commercial. Michael responded with the statement below.

“That is so stupid,” he answered. “That’s the most ridiculous, horrifying story I’ve ever heard. It’s crazy. I mean, why? Number one, it’s my face as a child in the commercial. Me, when I was little. Why would I want a white child to play me? I’m a black American. I’m proud to be a black American. I am proud of my race. I am proud of who I am. I have a lot of pride in who I am and dignity.”

The 30-minute comedy, titled “Elizabeth, Michael & Marlon,” will be televised on the Britain satellite TV channel Sky Arts some time in 2016. The show will be about a road trip that Michael supposedly took in 2011 with his close friends Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando.

Taraji P. Henson Sends Subliminal Message To Hollywood About Black Roles In Film & Television

TARAJI weekly scoop.docx

Author: Amy Nicole

The Golden Globe Awards aired on Sunday night and everyone is still discussing Taraji P. Henson’s acceptance speech. Henson won an award for best actress in a tv series drama for her role in Empire. Although her speech was humorous, it also revealed a subliminal message behind the types of roles that black actors are recognized for in Hollywood.

In her speech she said, “Who knew that playing an ex-convict would take me all around the globe, I thought I would have won for Queenie (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) or my character in Karate Kid but it’s for Cookie, who spent 17 years in prison for selling crack. Okay so the world loves real!”

Many speculate that the actress was referring to film industry executives who have been accused of primarily awarding black actors for stereotypical roles like criminals or domestic roles.

This same discussion was brought up several years ago when Halle Berry and Denzel Washington both won Oscars for their roles in the movies Monster’s Ball and Training Day. In Monster’s Ball, Berry portrayed a single, poor mom who became a widow after her husband was executed in prison.  Denzel Washington received an award for his character in the movie Training Day in which he portrayed a corrupt cop and drug dealer. Both Washington and Berry have a plethora of amazing films which left many people wondering why they awarded for the portrayal of characters depicted in a negative light.

Not sure if the awarding to black actors for stereotypical roles is intentional or not but there is definitely a correlation between how black people are perceived in society and how we are portrayed in films.

RYAN COOGLER TO DIRECT MARVEL’S BLACK PANTHER

ryan marvel

Ryan Coogler has officially been confirmed as the director for Marvel’s Black Panther! Although Coogler is still fairly new to directing he has two dynamic feature films behind his belt. He directed the 2013 award winning film Fruitvale Station, based on the true story of Oscar Grant, and most recently the movie Creed which is a spinoff from the Rocky franchise.

The Black Panther movie will be historic for Marvel because the character is the first black superhero in mainstream American comics.  According to Marvel Studios, viewers can expect an African ambiance which will give fans an inside look into the nation of Wakanda, the fictional African nation that Black Panther rules over. Actor Chadwick Boseman is currently cast to play the lead role of Black Panther.

Due to the cultural background of the film Marvel felt it was important to give the movie authenticity by seeking out a black director.  Because Coogler is young and a diverse filmmaker he will definitely bring a unique spin to the film.

Black Panther is set to hit theaters in 2018!

TUPAC BIOPIC “ALL EYEZ ON ME” CURRENTLY FILMING IN ATLANTA GEORGIA

tupac-shakur

The rumors that have been circulating for years regarding a Tupac movie can finally be put to rest. It has officially been confirmed that production for a Tupac biopic entitled “All Eyez on Me” is currently being filmed in Atlanta, Georgia.  One of the films’ producers, L.T. Hutton confirmed the film by recently posting several behind the scenes photos from the set on his Instagram page.

The film is being directed by Benny Boom and it will supposedly cover the rappers entire life including his death in 1996. Unknown actor Demetrius Shipp Jr. has been cast to portray Tupac and from looking at his pictures he is definitely a good choice as he bears a striking resemblance to the late rapper.

tupac-shakur-demetrius-shipp-jr
Left (Demetrius Shipp Jr.) Right (Tupac Shakur)

Initially the film was to be directed by John Singelton(Boys In The Hood) but he stepped down from the project in April stating that the late rappers legacy wasn’t being respected and that  there were attempts to sue Tupac’s mother Afeni Shakur.

L.T. Hutton refuted those claims and stated that Singleton was actually fired from the project. Singleton is reportedly working on a separate Tupac movie which he says will be much better than the film currently in production.

Let’s hope that these claims aren’t true and that the movie will pay homage to the late rapper’s legacy.

What are your thoughts about the forthcoming biopic? Do you plan on watching?

Chadwick Boseman To Portray Thurgood Marshall In Upcoming Film

chadwick and thurgood

In the course of only three years actor Chadwick Boseman has starred in 2 biopics. He portrayed James Brown last year in the film Get On Up and in 2013 he portrayed legendary baseball player Jackie Robinson in the movie 42.  Soon Boseman will add another biopic to his resume as he has been casted to play Thurgood Marshall, the first African American Supreme Court Justice. Thurgood Marshall was an active member of the NAACP and he was also a civil rights activist. The film is being directed by Reginald Hudlin and will focus on an early case in Marshalls’ career.

Although I’m excited about Boseman being selected for the film some critics believe that his casting in a third biopic shows the lack of support by Hollywood to seek out and employ qualified black actors. Initially after filming Get On Up, Boseman stated that he had no interest in starring in another biopic. We’re not sure what changed his mind but none the less I’m definitely looking forward to the film.

Chi-raq Trailer Sparks Mixed Reactions

ChiRaqMoviePoster (1)

The movie trailer for Spike Lee’s Chi-raq was released a few days ago and people seemed to have either loved it or hated it. Critics of the movie complained about everything from the title choice down to the actors chosen to star in the film. Some even felt that the trailer watered down the severity of the crime in Chicago.

The mayor of Chicago spoke out against the title choice saying that it painted an unrealistic picture of the city, while others felt the picture painted wasn’t realistic enough and that the movie made light of the crime issue in Chicago. Chi-raq is a nickname given to the city because the violence in certain parts is comparable to war zones in Iraq.

The original trailer comes off as a comedic Broadway musical showing women making an agreement to withhold sex from their men in hopes that it will cause the violence in the city to stop. The backlash from the trailer was so heavy that Spike Lee spoke out:

“Chi-raq” is not a comedy. It’s a satire. There’s a difference between humor and comedy. In no way, shape or form are we not respectful of the situation that is happening in Chi-raq. This film is about serious business.”

Lee also released a second trailer which gave off a more serious tone. Seeing that Lee is a veteran filmmaker with a track record for making successful innovative and unconventional films that deliver a powerful message, I’m surprised that there is so much negativity directed at the movie.  I think Lee knows exactly what he is doing and he has everything under control. The film is set to be released in limited theaters next month and it will also be available for streaming on amazon.
