Kendrick Lamar Criticized For Embracing Stretch Marks

Kendrick Lamar Criticized For Embracing Stretch Marks

Sooo last week K Dot dropped a single and video called Humble, which for the most part seemed to receive mainly positive reactions from fans. Before I even had a chance to listen to the track I was already hearing that the song was getting backlash especially from women.

Initially when I heard the song I liked it; I kept trying to figure out what lyrics in the track was causing the backlash? I listened to the song and watched the video a few more times to see if I missed something. Was it his excessive use of the word bitch? Which in my opinion wasn’t directed at women but just being used in general. Was it his cockiness and confidence in subtly referring to himself as one of the better rappers/MCs in the game right now? Which again in my opinion was him expressing that he is competition; something that has been done in hip hop for years.

To my surprise the backlash was from these 3 lines:

I’m so fuckin’ sick and tired of the Photoshop
Show me somethin’ natural like afro on Richard Pryor
Show me somethin’ natural like ass with some stretchmarks

According to various sources some women felt these lyrics were downing a certain group of women while praising another. Personally I appreciated the words of a man saying how he prefers something natural especially since we live in such a superficial society. If you don’t like something about yourself physically there are so many options to alter your appearance whether if it’s by using an app, filter or getting cosmetic surgery. There are so many images of what the standard of beauty looks like that it’s easy to downplay your own natural beauty. It’s easy to feel like your “lack of” is a flaw rather than just your uniqueness.

Kendrick’s highly anticipated album is set to be released on Friday. What did ya’ll think about the track?

Oh and I just saw this video of Chloe and Halle’s cover of Humble. They are so adorable and crazy talented!
